How do insects affect farming?

Insects affect farming in two very different ways, helpful pollinators increase how much fruit and seed a crop produces, while pest insects can damage or destroy entire fields of plants if left unchecked. Farmers spend enormous effort trying to encourage the helpful insects while managing the harmful ones, since removing all insects entirely would actually backfire and hurt harvests. Understanding which insects help and which harm a specific crop has become an entire branch of science that shapes how modern farms are managed.

Why do farmers rely on pollinators?

Many crops simply cannot produce fruit or seeds without pollinators moving pollen between flowers, which means a farmer's entire harvest of certain crops depends directly on enough insects visiting at exactly the right time. Some farmers even rent beehives, trucking them from farm to farm to make sure crops get pollinated during their short flowering window. Losing wild pollinators in an area can force farmers into this kind of expensive, managed pollination just to keep producing the same amount of food as before.

Could people eat insects as food?

How do pesticides affect insect populations?

Pesticides are chemicals farmers spray to kill insects that damage crops, but many of them cannot tell the difference between a harmful pest and a helpful pollinator, killing both indiscriminately.
