little one is holding a big cup of water. My cup.
The cup tips and the water runs out. Splash!
There is a puddle on the table. Growy looks. My cup.
Again. Both hands hold the cup up to the mouth. A sip.
A grin from ear to ear. So proud! My empty cup.

What is your child already trying to do without help?
Where in the day is there room for the slow version?
Which is harder for you, the mess or the waiting?
👪For you
When a child wants to hold the cup without help, or push a foot into a shoe, there can be several things behind it: curiosity, copying adults, the wish to control something of their own. Whatever the reason, that same wish for something to happen without help is what later grows into skill, so the slow attempt is the point of that moment rather than an obstacle on the way to finishing breakfast. Hands and fingers are still learning how far to tip, how hard to grip and when to stop, and that is only learned by repeating it. If you already know the morning will run slower, it helps to leave a little more time up front, because a child this age cannot hurry on request. That does not mean it will always go calmly, since tiredness, hunger or a bad night change everything. And when the bus is leaving, taking the cup and putting the shoe on yourself is an ordinary parenting decision, and nothing is broken by it. The chance to try comes round again tomorrow.
