🦋 Buzzing and fluttering

A bee makes a buzzing sound by flapping its wings very, very fast.

That buzzing sound comes from a bee's wings beating incredibly fast, so fast that you cannot even see them flap one at a time, only a blur. The fast beating pushes air in tiny waves that your ears pick up as a steady buzz. Bees do not buzz on purpose to communicate, it is simply the sound their busy, speedy wings make while flying from flower to flower.

A butterfly's wings are covered in thousands of tiny scales. Each one is so small you would need a magnifying glass to see it. Some colours come from real pigment, just like the colour in your crayons. Other scales catch the light like tiny bits of glitter, which makes them shimmer and change colour. That mix of scales paints the beautiful patterns you see on a butterfly's wings.

A ladybug's bright red or orange colour with black spots is actually a warning sign to hungry birds, telling them that this little bug tastes bitter and unpleasant. Animals that try eating a ladybug once usually remember that bold pattern and leave the next one alone. The number of spots can even be different between ladybugs, some kinds have two spots, others have many more.

Fireflies make their own light inside their bodies by mixing special chemicals together, creating a soft glow without any heat at all. Each firefly flashes its own special pattern of light, almost like blinking in a secret code, mostly to find and talk to other fireflies of the same kind. On warm summer evenings, you can sometimes see whole groups of fireflies blinking together in the dark like tiny floating lanterns.
