Are spiders bugs?

People often call spiders bugs, but scientists put them in a different group than insects. Spiders have eight legs, while insects have six. Spiders also have a body split into two parts, while insects have three. On top of that, spiders do not have antennae, which almost every true insect has. Even though they are not technically insects, spiders share the outside world with them and often eat the very same bugs you have been learning about.

🌟
Talk about itDoes it surprise you that spiders are not actually insects? Why or why not?
Did you know? There are more known kinds of spiders in the world than there are kinds of mammals, like dogs, cats and bears combined.
🎲
Try itLook at a spider's body next time you spot one, and see if you can count its eight legs and two body parts.

How many legs does a spider have?

A spider has eight legs, two more than most bugs, so it is not really a bug at all.

🌟
Talk about itHave you ever seen a spider up close?
Did you know?A spider can walk on eight legs at the same time without ever tripping over itself.
🎲
Try itCount eight fingers and thumbs, just like a spider counts its legs.

Why do spiders make webs? Revealexpand_more Flip to revealautorenew
Why do spiders make webs?

A spider spins a sticky web to catch tiny bugs to eat, like a little net hanging in the air.

🌟
Talk about itHave you ever seen a spider web with dew on it?
Did you know?Spider silk is so light and strong that it can catch a flying bug without breaking at all.
🎲
Try itLook for a spider web outside and see if you can find its sparkly threads.

Why do spiders spin webs?

A spider spins a web using silk it makes inside its own body. It stretches sticky threads between branches or corners to catch flying or crawling bugs. When a bug bumps into the web, the sticky threads hold it in place. The spider feels the shaking through its legs and rushes over. Building a whole web can take less than an hour, and some spiders even eat their old web to reuse the silk.

🌟
Talk about itIf you could build a home out of anything, what material would you choose, like a spider chooses silk?
Did you know?Spider silk is so strong for its thinness that scientists have compared it to steel of the same width.
🎲
Try itLook for a spiderweb outside, maybe sparkling with morning dew, and notice its careful, spiral pattern.

Why do crickets chirp?

A cricket chirps by rubbing one wing against the other, like running a tiny comb along its edge. Male crickets mostly chirp to attract a mate or to warn other crickets to stay away. Crickets chirp faster when it is warm outside and slower when it is cool.

🌟
Talk about itWhat is your favourite nighttime sound you hear outside your window?
Did you know? You can guess the temperature outside by counting how many times a cricket chirps in a set amount of time and doing a bit of maths.
🎲
Try itListen for cricket chirps on a warm evening and count how many chirps you hear in fifteen seconds.

Why do crickets chirp at night?

A cricket rubs its two wings together to make a chirping sound, calling out to other crickets nearby.

🌟

Why do worms come out after rain?

Earthworms breathe through their moist skin. When heavy rain fills the tiny air spaces in the soil with water, worms wriggle up to the surface to get enough air. Rain also makes it easier for worms to slide across the ground, since their skin needs to stay wet to move. Once the soil dries out and lets air back in, worms usually head back underground.

🌟
Talk about itHave you ever seen a worm after it rained? What did you do?
Did you know?Earthworms have no eyes at all, yet they can still sense light and darkness through their skin.
🎲
Try itAfter the next rain shower, look on the pavement or grass for worms and gently help any stuck ones back to soil.

Why do worms come out after rain?

After it rains, worms wiggle up out of the wet ground to breathe fresh air.

🌟
Talk about itHave you ever held a worm in your hand?
Did you know?A worm breathes through its skin, so it can even drown if too much rainwater fills up its tunnel.
