How do bees build a hive?

Worker bees build a hive from wax that they actually make inside their own bodies, chewing and shaping it into thousands of perfect six-sided cells packed tightly together. That honeycomb shape is not an accident, hexagons use the least amount of wax possible while still leaving no wasted gaps between cells. Different cells serve different purposes, some store honey, some store pollen, and others become tiny nurseries for growing baby bees.

How do ant colonies organize work?

An ant colony divides work without any single ant giving orders, instead each ant reacts to signals around it, like scent trails, touch, and how crowded a task already is, deciding what to do next almost automatically. Young ants often start with jobs inside the nest, like caring for eggs, before eventually moving on to riskier outside jobs like foraging as they get older. What is a termite mound?

A termite mound is a towering structure that termites build out of soil, saliva and droppings, sometimes rising many times taller than the termites themselves. Inside, a clever network of tunnels and chimneys keeps fresh air circulating and helps regulate temperature, almost like a natural air conditioning system built without any tools. Some termite mounds can house millions of termites and last for decades, constantly repaired and rebuilt by generation after generation.

Why do some insects live alone?

Not every insect lives in a busy colony, many kinds, like most beetles, dragonflies and solitary bees, live completely alone and only ever meet another of their own kind to mate. Living solo means an insect does not have to share food or shelter, but it also means facing every danger completely by itself, without a whole colony to help defend it. Scientists think solitary living tends to work best for insects whose food is scattered and unpredictable, since a big group would struggle to find enough to share.
