How do insects see the world?

Most insects see through compound eyes, made of thousands of tiny individual lenses packed closely together, each capturing a slightly different angle of the world at once. This gives insects a wide field of view and makes them excellent at noticing quick movement, like a hand swooping in to swat them. What they lack is sharp detail, so the world likely looks more like a blurry, tiled mosaic than the crisp picture our eyes create.

Insects smell and taste mainly through their antennae, and surprisingly, many can also taste through tiny sensors on their feet, meaning a fly can taste food just by landing on it. How can ants lift so much weight?

Ants can lift many times their own body weight partly because of simple physics, smaller creatures need proportionally less strength to move their own mass than larger ones do. Their muscles are also packed efficiently inside a lightweight exoskeleton, giving surprisingly strong force for such a tiny body. Working together as a team lets ants combine that strength even further, sometimes carrying objects far too heavy or awkward for a single ant alone.

How do insects sense danger?

Insects rely on a mix of senses to detect danger, tiny hairs on their body that feel the faintest change in air movement, eyes tuned to notice sudden motion, and antennae that pick up warning scents from other insects nearby.
