🕰️ Telling time on a clock

A clock face is divided into twelve big sections for the hours and sixty small ticks for the minutes, all arranged in a circle. To read the time, you check where the short hour hand is pointing first, then look at the long minute hand to see exactly how many minutes past that hour it is. With a little practice, your eyes learn to take in both hands at once instead of checking them one at a time.

The short hour hand tells you roughly which hour you are in, and it moves so slowly that you can barely see it shift even after watching for several minutes. The long minute hand moves much faster, sweeping all the way around the clock once every hour, and each small step it takes equals exactly one minute. Together, the two hands work like a team, one giving you the big picture and the other filling in the exact detail.

An hour is made up of sixty minutes, and a full day, from one midnight to the next, is made up of twenty-four hours. That means a single day contains one thousand four hundred and forty minutes, way more than most people ever stop to count. These numbers were chosen a long time ago and have stuck ever since, giving everyone in the world the exact same way to measure a day.

Since a clock face only shows twelve numbers, the twenty-four hours of a day get split into two matching halves, one running from midnight to noon, called AM, and one running from noon to midnight, called PM. That is why a clock might show three o'clock twice in one day, once in the morning as three AM and once in the afternoon as three PM. Some countries and clocks skip this splitting entirely and instead count straight from zero to twenty-three, all the way through the day.
