📅 Days of the week

You can ask a grown-up, or check a calendar, and they will tell you the name of today.

A week is a group of seven days that we count together, one after another, before starting a new group of seven again. Each day in a week has its own name, so you always know exactly which day you are on. Weeks help us plan ahead, like knowing school starts again in two days, or a birthday party is happening in one week.

Some days you get dressed and go to school or daycare, and other days you get to stay home and play.

People chose seven days a very long time ago. That grouping caught on and spread from place to place, until almost everyone in the world was using the same seven-day pattern. Seven is a handy number, not too short to plan around, and not too long to remember easily. The seven-day week just kept going, generation after generation, exactly the same.

Weekdays are the five days when most children go to school and many grown-ups go to work. The weekend is the two days set aside mostly for resting, playing and spending time together. This pattern of five and two repeats every single week, all year round. Weekends did not always exist the way we know them, people slowly agreed to set aside those two days as time for rest.

Everyone can pick their own favorite day, maybe it is a day with a fun activity, or just a day that feels extra nice.

The days of the week always follow the exact same order, so once you know today's name, you can count forward one step to find tomorrow's name. Many people check a calendar to be sure, since it lays out the whole week, or month, in neat rows so you can see what is coming next. After the seventh day of the week finishes, the whole pattern simply starts over again from the first day.

The weekend is often a time for slower mornings, family time, and maybe a trip to the park or a friend's house.
