🗓️ Calendars and months

A calendar is a chart that lays out all the days, weeks and months of a year in order, so you can see exactly where any date falls. It helps you plan for things happening far in the future, like a holiday next month, not just for tomorrow. Calendars also help whole countries agree on the same dates, so everyone can plan school, work and celebrations together.

Long ago, people wanted months to roughly match the moon's cycle, but a full year does not divide evenly into perfect month-sized pieces, so the days ended up spread out a little unevenly. Some months got thirty days, some got thirty-one, and February ended up with the shortest one, usually twenty-eight. A simple trick, counting the knuckles on your fist, still helps people remember which month gets which number today.

The twelve months, from January through December, divide the whole year into smaller chunks that roughly match how many times the moon cycles through its phases in one year. Each month has its own personality, tied to seasons, holidays and even the weather in different parts of the world. Splitting the year into twelve pieces instead of just counting all three hundred and sixty five days at once makes it much easier to talk about and plan around.

Earth actually takes a little longer than exactly three hundred and sixty five days to travel all the way around the sun, closer to three hundred and sixty five and a quarter days. Every four years, those extra quarter days add up to almost one whole extra day, so we tack one more day onto February to keep our calendar matching up with Earth's real trip around the sun. Without leap years, our calendar would slowly drift out of sync with the seasons over many, many years.
