What is the scientific method?

The scientific method is a step-by-step way scientists use to test an idea fairly: they ask a question, make a guess called a hypothesis, run a test, and look closely at what happens before deciding if the guess was right. It is less about being right on the first try and more about being honest about what actually happened.

Why do scientists repeat experiments so many times?

Repeating an experiment helps scientists make sure their result was not just a lucky accident or a mistake in how the test was run. Why do scientists need a fair test?

A fair test means only one thing is changed at a time while everything else stays the same, so scientists know exactly what caused the result. Without a fair test, you cannot really tell what made the difference, maybe the plant grew taller because of more sunlight, or maybe it just got a bigger pot, and you would never know which. Scientists call the one thing they change on purpose the "variable," and everything they keep the same helps make the test fair.

How do scientists share their discoveries with others?
