What actually happens during a chemical reaction, at the level of atoms?

During a chemical reaction, atoms do not disappear or get destroyed, they simply rearrange, breaking old connections between atoms and forming new ones to build entirely different substances. When wood burns, its atoms combine with oxygen from the air and rearrange into new substances like ash, smoke and carbon dioxide, but every single atom that started in the wood is still out there somewhere. This is why scientists say matter is conserved, the total amount of atoms stays exactly the same, only their arrangement changes.

What makes something acidic versus basic?

Acids and bases are two opposite types of chemicals, acids like lemon juice or vinegar taste sour and can react strongly with certain metals, while bases like soap or baking soda feel slippery and taste bitter. Scientists measure exactly how acidic or basic something is using a scale called pH, where low numbers mean strongly acidic, high numbers mean strongly basic, and the middle is neutral, like plain water. When you mix an acid and a base together in the right amounts, they can actually cancel each other out completely, a process called neutralising.

Why do some substances conduct heat better than others?

Heat moves through a material when jiggling, vibrating atoms bump into their neighbours and pass that jiggling energy along, and in materials like metal, the atoms are packed in a way that makes this handoff very fast and efficient. That is exactly why a metal spoon left in hot soup heats up quickly, while a wooden or plastic spoon stays cool enough to hold. Materials that conduct heat poorly, called insulators, are often used to keep things like drinks or houses at a steady temperature.

What makes something magnetic?

A material is magnetic when the tiny particles inside its atoms line up so that their pulling and pushing forces all point the same direction instead of cancelling each other out. In most materials these tiny forces point every which way and cancel out, but in a few special materials, like iron, they can be lined up all together, creating a strong, noticeable pull. You can actually turn an ordinary piece of iron into a temporary magnet just by rubbing it repeatedly with a strong magnet in the same direction.
