Hi, little one. Something is different today. When you wake up, Growy is already bouncing at the end of your bed with a tiny party hat on. 'Happy birthday! You are a whole year bigger than yesterday.'

You count on your fingers how old you are now. It feels exciting and a little strange, like wearing shoes one size up. Growy says, 'A birthday is not just the cake. It is a whole year of new things you can do.'

You look back at the year. You learned to hop on one foot, to pour your own water, to zip up your own coat. Growy nods at each one. 'Look how much bigger your can-do list has grown.'

At your little party, everyone sings, and Growy sings loudest of all, even though Growy forgets half the words and just hums the rest. You take a big breath, make a wish, and blow. The candle smoke curls up and, for one magic moment, draws the shape of your wish in the air. Growy leans in, 'Growing one year bigger also means growing one year braver.' Everyone cheers.

Later, full of cake and happy, you tell Growy your favorite part was all of it. Growy grins and asks, 'So, little one... did we grow a little today?' You did, a whole year's worth. 'Here is your little grow for tomorrow,' says Growy. 'Do one thing all by yourself that you know how to do now.' See you tomorrow, little one.

💡Read together

  • What is something new you can do this year that you could not before?
  • What did you wish for?
  • How does being a year older feel to you?

👪For you

Birthdays are a chance to help a child notice their own growth, which builds a healthy sense of capability. Rather than focusing only on presents, you can look back together at the skills they have gained over the year, which turns the day into a story of becoming rather than getting. Some children find the attention or the singing overwhelming, so let a shy child set the pace, and remember that a small, calm celebration is often more joyful than a big loud one.

🎨Try this

🎂 Make a can-do list. Together, write or draw a few things your child learned to do in the past year, from small to big. Reading it aloud on the birthday helps them feel proud of how much they have grown, not just a year older but a year more capable.
