Why is fresh water a limited resource?

Even though water covers most of Earth's surface, about ninety-seven percent of it is salty ocean water that people and most plants cannot drink, leaving only a small slice as fresh water. Most of that fresh water is actually locked away as ice in glaciers and polar ice caps, or hidden deep underground, leaving only a tiny fraction easily available in rivers and lakes. Because fresh water takes time to refill naturally and is not evenly spread around the world, using it carefully matters even in places where it seems to flow endlessly from a tap.

How does desalination work?

Desalination is the process of removing salt from ocean water to make it drinkable, and one common method pushes seawater through an extremely fine filter called a membrane that lets water molecules through but blocks the larger salt particles. Another method heats seawater until it evaporates into water vapour, leaving the salt behind, then cools that vapour back into fresh liquid water, similar to how rain forms from evaporated water. Desalination plants are especially useful in dry places with little fresh water but easy access to the sea, though the process uses a lot of energy and equipment to run.
