How does electricity get to your house?

Electricity is usually made far away at a power plant, where spinning machines called generators turn movement, from steam, wind, water, or other sources, into electrical energy. That electricity travels along high, thick wires called power lines, crossing long distances at very high strength before reaching a local station that lowers it to a safer level. From there, smaller wires carry that electricity underground or along poles until it finally reaches the wiring hidden inside your walls.

How does a fridge really keep food cold?

Inside a fridge, a special fluid called refrigerant flows through a loop of pipes, and a pump called a compressor squeezes it to make it heat up, then lets it expand again to make it cool down. As that cool refrigerant flows through pipes inside the fridge, it soaks up heat from your food and the air around it, then carries that heat outside through pipes at the back. This constant cycle of squeezing, cooling, and absorbing heat is what scientists call the refrigeration cycle, and it repeats over and over to keep everything inside chilled.

How does a washing machine really get clothes clean?

A washing machine combines three things working together, water and soap to loosen dirt, spinning motion to physically knock and rub that dirt free, and a careful rinse cycle to wash the loosened dirt away completely. The drum spins one way, then the other, tumbling clothes so every part gets a turn facing the soapy water rather than just sitting still. A final, extremely fast spin uses the same idea as swinging a wet towel around, flinging water outward through tiny holes in the drum to leave clothes far drier.

How does a battery store energy?

Inside a battery, a chemical reaction is ready and waiting to happen between two different materials, but it can only happen once you connect the battery into a circuit that gives electrons somewhere to travel. Once connected, electrons flow from one end of the battery to the other through the wire, powering whatever the wire is connected to, whether that is a toy, a light, or a remote control. As the chemicals inside slowly get used up, the battery has less and less energy left to push those electrons, which is why batteries eventually run flat.
