How does the electrical grid work?

The electrical grid is a giant connected network linking power plants, wires, and transformers all the way to homes and businesses, constantly balancing how much electricity is being made with how much is being used at that exact moment. Because electricity is hard to store in large amounts, power plants must adjust production throughout the day to match rising and falling demand, using more power plants when everyone wakes up or comes home from school. Transformers along the way raise the voltage very high for long-distance travel, since high voltage loses less energy over distance, then lower it back down to a safe level before it reaches your house.

How does the refrigeration cycle actually work?

The refrigeration cycle relies on a special fluid, called refrigerant, that can absorb and release heat easily as it changes between liquid and gas, moving around a sealed loop of pipes. A compressor squeezes the refrigerant gas, which heats it up and turns it into a hot, high-pressure gas that then releases its heat to the outside air as it cools and turns back into a liquid. That liquid refrigerant then flows through an expansion valve that lets it suddenly expand and cool dramatically, so it can absorb heat from inside the fridge or room, before returning to the compressor to repeat the whole cycle again.

How do solar panels generate electricity?

Solar panels are covered in a special material, usually silicon, that has an unusual property, when sunlight hits it, some of its tiny particles called electrons get knocked loose and start flowing. Engineers arrange that silicon in careful layers so those loose electrons all flow in the same direction instead of randomly, creating a steady electric current that can be used or stored. That electric current then travels through wires into your home or into a battery, often passing through a device called an inverter that changes it into the exact type of electricity your appliances use.

How do touchscreens work?

Most touchscreens are covered with a thin, invisible grid of electrical charge spread evenly across the glass, and your finger, which naturally conducts a small amount of electricity, disturbs that grid the moment it touches the screen. The screen's sensors detect exactly where that disturbance happened, hundreds of times every second, and send that location to the device's processor to figure out what you meant to tap or swipe. This is part of why touchscreens usually do not respond to gloves or a plain plastic stylus, since they are not designed to disturb that electrical grid the same way skin does.
