What happens in your brain while you sleep?

Your brain moves through several different stages of sleep each night, cycling between lighter sleep, deep sleep, and a very active stage called REM sleep, where most dreaming happens. During deep sleep, your brain helps your body repair muscles and grow, while during REM sleep, it sorts and strengthens the memories you formed that day. Brain activity does not simply switch off during sleep, instead it shifts into different patterns that each do a different important job.

Why do kids need more sleep than adults?

A child's brain and body are growing and changing at an incredible pace, building new connections, learning new skills, and growing taller, and most of that repair and growth work happens during sleep. Adults have mostly finished growing, so their bodies need less of that deep repair time each night, even though rest is still important at every age. That is part of why a nine-year-old needs roughly ten to eleven hours of sleep, while most adults get by on around seven to nine.

Your body follows an internal clock that expects sleep and wake times to happen at fairly steady hours, so waking up earlier than your body is used to can interrupt sleep stages that were not finished yet. Waking up in the middle of deep sleep feels especially groggy, since your brain has not had the chance to shift back into a lighter, more awake stage first. Bright morning light actually helps reset that internal clock fastest, which is why sunlight often chases grogginess away quicker than almost anything else.
