How is a star born?

A star begins inside a giant cloud of gas and dust floating in space. Gravity slowly pulls the cloud together into a tighter and tighter ball, and as it squeezes, the centre grows incredibly hot. When it gets hot enough, the core lights up and a brand new star begins to shine.

🌟
Talk about itIf you could name a newborn star, what would you call it?
⭐
Did you know?New stars are still being born right now in vast clouds called nebulae.
🎲
Try itSqueeze a ball of playdough tightly in your hands and feel it warm up a little. Gravity heats a forming star the same way, but far, far more.

How do stars shine so brightly?

Deep in a star's core, the pressure and heat are so extreme that tiny pieces of gas are squeezed together and joined into new ones. This joining, called fusion, releases a huge burst of energy, and that energy streams out as the light and warmth we see. Our Sun does this every single second.

🌟
Talk about itWhat would life be like without the light of our nearest star?
⭐
Did you know? The light reaching your eyes from the Sun left its surface about eight minutes ago.
🎲
Try itRub your palms together fast and feel the heat. A star makes heat too, but by joining bits of gas instead of rubbing.

What happens when a star dies?

A star shines for billions of years, but one day it runs out of the gas it burns. Smaller stars slowly puff up, cool down and fade away. The biggest stars end with a giant explosion called a supernova, scattering their material into space where it can help form new stars and planets.

🌟
Talk about itIt is amazing that we are made of star material. How does that make you feel?
⭐
Did you know? The atoms in your own body were made inside stars that died long before the Sun was born.
🎲
Try itBlow up a balloon slowly, then let it go. A dying star can swell up or burst, just far more dramatically.

What is a black hole?

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so incredibly hard that nothing can escape, not even light. Most form when a giant star collapses at the end of its life, squeezing a huge amount of material into a tiny space. Because no light comes out, a black hole looks completely dark.

🌟
Talk about itBlack holes are mysterious and a little spooky. What question would you most want answered about them?
⭐
Did you know?If you fell toward a black hole, time itself would seem to slow down for you.
🎲
Try itImagine a drain so strong it pulls in water, toys and even the light in the room. A black hole pulls far harder than that.
