Bath time is one of the few moments in the day when your hands are busy and your voice is free. Babies respond to the tune of a voice long before they respond to the meaning of words, so naming what you are doing, now the arm, now the leg, now the back, hands them a rhythm and their first words in the same package. Keeping the order the same every time helps too, because a baby who can predict what comes next often settles more easily. Have the water comfortably warm, never hot, and always check it yourself before your baby goes in. If your baby cries in the bath, that is not a failure, yours or theirs. Some babies need a few weeks before water feels good, and until then a shorter bath and a voice that stays the same are what help. Above all, keep a hand on your baby the whole time, without exception, because a child is never left in the bath for even a second.
