How is climate change affecting ocean temperature and currents?

As Earth's atmosphere traps more heat overall, the ocean absorbs a huge share of that extra warmth, causing average ocean temperatures to rise gradually over recent decades, with measurable effects on marine life, coral reefs, and weather patterns worldwide. Melting glaciers and ice sheets add large amounts of extra fresh water into the ocean, particularly near the poles, which can alter the delicate balance of temperature and salinity that normally drives major deep ocean currents. Scientists are especially concerned that these currents could weaken or shift in unfamiliar ways as the climate continues changing, since so much of the planet's climate, weather, and marine life depend on those currents continuing to circulate in familiar, predictable patterns.

What role does the ocean play in the global carbon cycle?

The ocean acts as one of Earth's largest natural stores of carbon, constantly exchanging carbon dioxide with the atmosphere above it, absorbing some when levels in the air are high and slowly releasing some back under different conditions. Tiny ocean plants called phytoplankton pull enormous amounts of carbon out of seawater as they grow, and when they die, some of that carbon sinks down and settles into deep seafloor sediment, locking it away from the atmosphere for an extremely long time. Because the ocean holds and moves such an enormous amount of carbon compared to the atmosphere or land, even small changes in how efficiently it absorbs or releases carbon can have a noticeable ripple effect on Earth's entire climate system.

Ocean waves, tides, and currents all carry enormous amounts of constant, predictable motion energy that engineers are working to capture using specially designed underwater turbines and floating devices, converting that natural movement directly into electricity. Unlike wind or solar power, which depend on weather and daylight, tidal energy in particular follows extremely predictable daily patterns, driven reliably by the Moon's gravity rather than changing weather conditions. Offshore wind farms, built out at sea where winds tend to blow more strongly and consistently than on land, have already become one of the fastest-growing sources of renewable energy in many coastal countries around the world.

What new technologies are helping us understand the ocean better today?

Autonomous underwater robots, called ocean gliders or drones, can now travel through the ocean for months at a time without any human on board, continuously collecting detailed data on temperature, salinity, and marine life across enormous stretches of water. Satellites orbiting far above Earth constantly monitor sea surface temperature, ocean colour, and even subtle changes in sea level across the entire planet, providing scientists with a broad, constantly updated view impossible to achieve from ships alone. Scientists are also increasingly using environmental DNA testing, analysing tiny genetic traces left behind in a simple sample of seawater, to detect which species have recently been present in an area without ever needing to see or catch a single creature directly.
