What are ocean currents?

Ocean currents are like giant, slow-moving rivers of water flowing through the ocean, carrying huge amounts of water across enormous distances in fairly consistent, predictable paths. Currents are driven mainly by wind blowing steadily across the surface, differences in water temperature and saltiness, and even the way Earth spins, all pushing water in certain directions over and over. Some currents flow warm water away from the equator toward colder regions, while others carry cold water back the other way, together forming a slow, connected loop that circulates water all around the entire globe.

How does the ocean affect the weather on land?

The ocean absorbs an enormous amount of heat from the sun and releases it slowly, which helps keep coastal areas milder overall, cooler in summer and warmer in winter, compared to places far from any ocean. Water constantly evaporates from the ocean's surface into the air, and that evaporated moisture eventually falls as rain, which is part of why coastal regions often get more rainfall than places deep inland. Ocean currents also carry warm or cool water to different parts of the world, which can noticeably shift the climate of nearby land, sometimes keeping a coastal region far warmer than its distance from the equator would otherwise suggest.

Why are some parts of the ocean warmer than others?

Ocean water near the equator receives much more direct, concentrated sunlight throughout the year than water near the poles, which is the main reason tropical ocean water usually feels noticeably warmer than polar ocean water. Ocean currents also move warm and cold water around the globe, sometimes carrying warmth far away from the equator or cold water toward warmer regions, which can make some coastal areas warmer or cooler than their latitude alone would predict. Water temperature also changes with depth almost everywhere, since sunlight only warms the upper layers directly, leaving deep ocean water cold and dark no matter how hot the surface gets nearby.

What causes a hurricane to form over the ocean?

Hurricanes form over ocean water that is warm enough, usually in tropical regions, where heat and moisture rising off the sea's surface fuel towering storm clouds that begin spinning together into an organised system. As more warm, moist air keeps rising and feeding the storm, it grows stronger and begins spinning faster, partly due to Earth's rotation, eventually forming the powerful, swirling shape we recognise as a hurricane. Because hurricanes depend entirely on warm ocean water for fuel, they weaken quickly once they move over land or cooler water, losing the constant supply of heat and moisture that was powering them.
