How did life first evolve in the ocean?

Scientists believe the very first living organisms on Earth appeared in ancient oceans billions of years ago, likely forming from simple chemical reactions happening in warm, mineral-rich water, possibly near hydrothermal vents or shallow pools. For an incredibly long stretch of Earth's early history, life remained entirely microscopic and ocean-based, slowly evolving more complex forms over enormous spans of time before anything resembling modern plants or animals existed at all. Only much later did some ocean life gradually evolve adaptations allowing it to survive on land, which is why scientists consider the ocean the true birthplace of essentially every branch of life found on Earth today, including humans.

Why do some ocean animals migrate thousands of kilometres?

Many ocean animals migrate to follow the changing seasonal availability of food, since areas rich with plankton or fish during one season might become far less productive later in the year, pushing animals to travel toward better feeding grounds elsewhere. Other migrations are driven by reproduction, with some species travelling enormous distances specifically to reach warmer, safer breeding or nesting areas, even if those areas offer little food along the way. Scientists believe some species navigate these long journeys using a combination of Earth's magnetic field, ocean currents, water temperature, and even the position of the sun and stars, though exactly how some animals manage it so precisely is still not fully understood.

How do marine mammals differ from fish biologically?

Marine mammals, like whales, dolphins, and seals, breathe air using lungs and must regularly surface, while fish extract oxygen directly from water using gills, letting them stay submerged indefinitely without ever needing to surface. Marine mammals are warm-blooded, generating and maintaining their own body heat internally regardless of the surrounding water temperature, while fish are cold-blooded, with body temperatures that shift to closely match the water around them. Marine mammals also give birth to live young and nurse them with milk, just like land mammals, while the vast majority of fish species lay eggs that develop and hatch entirely outside the mother's body.

What is symbiosis, and how common is it in the ocean?

Symbiosis describes a close, long-term relationship between two different species living closely together, and it appears remarkably often throughout ocean ecosystems, from coral and their algae partners to clownfish sheltering safely among the stinging tentacles of a sea anemone. In a mutually beneficial symbiosis, both species gain something valuable from the relationship, like a cleaner fish that safely eats parasites off a larger fish's skin, gaining an easy meal while the larger fish gets cleaned in return. Not every symbiotic relationship benefits both species equally, some involve one species quietly taking advantage of another without offering much back, which is why scientists carefully study exactly how each specific partnership actually works.
