🌍 Music around the world

Every musical tradition made its own choices about which notes to use, which instruments to build and which rhythms feel natural. Those choices were passed down for generations, so music from far away can sound strange at first and completely normal to the people who grew up with it.

Folk songs are the songs ordinary people sing at work, at parties and to their children. They are learned by ear, changed freely, and carry a lot of what a place remembers about itself.

Music makes words much easier to remember, so for most of history a song was one of the best ways to keep a story alive. A tune gives every line a shape, and rhyme makes the next word almost obvious.

Instruments grew out of local materials and local tastes, so different regions produced very different families of them. Trade and travel then carried those instruments everywhere, which is why a modern band can mix things invented thousands of kilometres apart.
