Anything with small things rattling inside works, like a jar of beans, a box of pasta or a rattle.

An instrument is a tool for making sound you can control. Most of them work by shaking something on purpose: a stretched skin, a tight string, or the column of air inside a tube.

Hitting a drum makes its tight skin bounce up and down many times a second, and every bounce shoves the air. Those shoves reach your ears as one round, booming note.

A bell rings when something taps its side and the whole bell shivers, sending a bright sound out into the room.

A piano key is a lever with a soft hammer at the other end. Pressing the key swings the hammer against a stretched string, the string vibrates, and the big wooden body makes that small sound loud enough to fill a room.

The pot shakes and turns your bang into a loud clang, which is exactly how a real drum works.

A whistle turns your breath into one clear, high sound, because the air spins fast inside a tiny space.

The strings are the part that shakes, and shaking is what makes sound. Each string is a different thickness and tightness, so each one sings its own note when you pluck it.
