📜 History of music

Written music evolved rather than being invented once. Ancient civilisations left fragments of notation, but the staff and note heads used worldwide today came from centuries of gradual refinement in medieval Europe, driven by the need to keep chants identical across distant monasteries.

They emerged over a few centuries as courts and churches gathered players, instrument designs settled into standard families, and composers wrote parts that needed dozens of musicians at once. Everything about the modern layout, from seating to the conductor, exists to keep that many people together.

It separated the performance from the moment. A song could suddenly be heard a thousand times, in another country, years after it was played, which changed what musicians made, how fast styles travelled and how people listened, often alone rather than in a crowd.

Style is shaped by available technology, by what audiences already know, and by musicians wanting to be different from the previous generation. When a new instrument or recording technique arrives, it spreads quickly and marks everything made in those years.
