🏺 Ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt grew up along the Nile River in Africa, thousands of years ago, and its people relied on the river's yearly floods to bring rich soil for growing wheat and other crops. Egyptian society had many different roles, farmers, builders, priests, scribes, and rulers, all working together to keep the kingdom running smoothly. Ancient Egypt lasted for an incredibly long time, roughly three thousand years, far longer than most countries have existed in their current form.

Ancient Egyptians built pyramids as giant tombs for their pharaohs, meant to protect the ruler's body and belongings safely for the afterlife they believed was coming. Building a pyramid took an enormous amount of planning, thousands of workers moved and stacked massive stone blocks, often using ramps, levers, and teamwork instead of machines. Egyptians believed a pharaoh needed everything from their earthly life packed safely inside, so pyramids were filled with furniture, food, jewellery, and other treasures.

A pharaoh was the supreme ruler of ancient Egypt, holding total control over the government, the army, and even religious ceremonies. Egyptians believed a pharaoh was connected to the gods, sometimes even seen as a god themselves, which gave them enormous power and respect throughout the kingdom. Some pharaohs are still famous today for what they built or achieved, while others are remembered because of incredible treasures found in their tombs centuries later.

Hieroglyphics were the picture-based writing system ancient Egyptians used, where small drawings of animals, objects, and people each stood for a sound, a word, or an idea. Egyptian scribes trained for years to learn hundreds of these symbols, and being able to read and write was a rare, valuable skill mostly reserved for important jobs. For a very long time, nobody could read hieroglyphics anymore, until a discovered stone carved with the same message in three different scripts finally helped experts crack the code.
