📷 Grandparents' time and old toys

Look for a photo of your grandma or grandpa when they were young. They probably looked quite different back then.

When your grandparents were children, many everyday things you use now did not exist yet, like smartphones, the internet, or some kinds of video games. Families often listened to the radio together, instead of watching shows whenever they wanted. Getting in touch with someone far away meant writing a letter, or waiting for a phone call on a phone attached to the wall. Even so, children back then still played games, told jokes, and had fun with friends, just using different tools than kids do today.

Look around for a toy that looks worn or has been played with a lot, maybe one that used to belong to someone older.

Long ago, children played with toys made from wood, cloth, and clay, since plastic toys did not exist yet. Simple dolls, spinning tops, and hoops rolled along with a stick were popular toys. Many toys were handmade by parents, grandparents, or the children themselves. That meant every toy was a little different and often quite unique. Children back then also played outdoor games with almost no equipment at all, using their imagination, a ball, or just their own two feet.

A wooden toy feels hard and smooth, and it often makes a little clacking sound when it bumps into something.

An old photograph is a picture taken long ago, sometimes with special old cameras that were much slower and heavier than the phone cameras people use today. Very old photographs are often in black and white or a faded brownish colour, because early cameras and printing methods could not capture full colour yet. Looking at an old photograph lets you see real people, places, and clothes from long ago, almost like a small window into the past.

Long before most people could read or write, stories about the past were passed down by simply telling them out loud, from parents to children, generation after generation. These spoken stories helped people remember important events, lessons, and even warnings, though details sometimes changed a little each time a story was retold. Today, stories from the past get passed down in many more ways, through books, photographs, videos, and museums, but people still love hearing history told out loud by someone who cares about it.
