Hi, little one. Today your friend Grow walks with you to see the doctor for a checkup. The waiting room has soft chairs, a basket of books, and a friendly nurse who waves hello. A small worry pops up in your tummy. 'I feel a bit wobbly too,' Grow admits, giving your paw a squeeze. 'But I'll go first, so you can see it's nothing scary.'

The doctor rests the cold, round stethoscope on Grow's chest. 'YEOWCH! COLD!' Grow yelps, jumping back so fast an ear bangs into the chair. 'Awful! Terrible! Never again!' You stare. That does not look very reassuring.

The doctor smiles and rubs the stethoscope between two hands until it warms up. 'Grow forgot to wait for it to warm up,' the doctor says gently. Curious now, you reach out and ask to try it yourself. You feel a cool circle on your skin, just for a moment, then nothing. 'Grow,' you say, 'it's just cold. It doesn't hurt at all.' Grow tilts its head. 'Really?' 'Really.'

Now the doctor rests the stethoscope gently on your chest, and you already know: just cold, then it passes. You hear your own heart beating like a tiny drum, boom-ba-boom. A little light peeks in your ears, and a soft band gives your arm a gentle squeeze and lets go. Every part is done, one calm breath at a time. Grow watches from the side, a little sheepish, a little proud.

The doctor gives you your prize: a sticker of a little lion that gives the softest roar when you press it. On the way home, you press the sticker and it roars softly. 'You know that better than I do,' says Grow. 'Cold just passes, no need to yelp.' You smile. Then Grow asks, 'So, little one... did we grow a little today?' You did. 'Here is your little grow for tomorrow,' says Grow. 'Touch something cold and count to three. You'll see, it's just cold, it doesn't hurt.' See you tomorrow, little one.

💡Read together

  • What did Grow forget before the stethoscope touched its skin?
  • Who told the doctor the stethoscope was just cold, not painful?
  • Was the stethoscope cold or painful in the end?

👪For you

Fear of the doctor is common and developmentally normal for toddlers and preschoolers. What helps most is honesty in advance (never promise that nothing will happen), naming what the tools do in simple words, and letting the child touch or hold them first so the unknown becomes familiar. Avoid springing the visit on them as a surprise, stay calm yourself since children read your body, and praise their cooperation afterward rather than bribing beforehand.

🎨Try this

🩺 Play checkup at home, but this time let someone yelp dramatically at something cold first (an ice cube, a cold spoon), and have your child show them it just takes three seconds to stop feeling cold.
