Clay is a special kind of soft, squishy earth that comes from the ground, made of very fine particles that stick together and hold water between them, which is exactly why it feels smooth and bendy in your hands. Because clay can be pushed, pinched, rolled and squeezed into almost any shape without breaking apart, it has been used to make pots, bricks and sculptures for thousands of years. Clay stays soft and workable as long as it is a little damp, but once it dries out or gets baked in intense heat, it hardens into a shape that holds firm.

Yes, roll play dough between your two hands and it slowly turns into a round ball.

Clay is soft because it holds a lot of water inside it. When you leave clay out, the water slowly dries into the air. Once the water is gone, the clay turns hard, just like a ball of mud left out in the sun. Air-dry clay can take days to harden all the way. Baking clay in a hot oven speeds this up a lot, and some baked clay stays hard forever, even if it gets wet again.

You can shape play dough into a snake, a little cake, an animal, or anything you can imagine.

A sculpture is a piece of art you can walk all the way around, built to take up real space in three dimensions instead of sitting flat on paper like a drawing or a painting. Sculptors make sculptures out of all kinds of materials, carving stone or wood away bit by bit, moulding soft clay with their hands, or joining pieces of metal or found objects together into a brand new shape. Because you can view a sculpture from many different angles, it often looks surprisingly different depending on whether you walk around to its front, side or back.

People make art to show how they feel. You could draw a big smiling sun when you are happy, or scribble dark lines when you feel scared. Making art also lets you choose everything yourself, every colour, shape and line. Every person makes art a little differently, so two people can draw the same thing and end up with different pictures.

Making art is fun because you get to choose the colors and shapes, and there is no wrong way to do it.
