✏️ Drawing and colours

Crayons come in every color you can think of, red, blue, yellow and more. Pick one up and look at its color.

Drawing means making marks with a pencil, crayon or pen to show something you see or imagine, like a face, a house or a dinosaur. Your hand tells the pencil where to go, and slowly those lines turn into a picture that other people can look at and understand. Anyone can draw, even without fancy tools, since all you really need is something to mark with and something to mark on.

A circle is round all the way around, like a wheel or the sun. Try drawing one with your finger in the air first.

A crayon is made mostly of wax mixed with colour, and wax is soft enough that little bits rub off onto paper whenever you press and drag it across the surface. The rough little bumps in paper actually help grab those tiny wax bits and hold them in place, which is why the mark stays put instead of sliding off. Press harder and more wax rubs off, which is why a hard push makes a bold, dark line and a light touch makes a pale one.

You can draw anything with a pencil, a sun, a dog, a house or even a squiggly line.

When you mix two colours of paint, you get a brand new colour that neither one was on its own. Blue and yellow paint mixed together make green. That feels like real magic the first time you see it happen.

Colours like red, orange and yellow remind us of sunshine and fire, so we call them warm colours. Colours like blue, green and purple remind us of water and shade, so we call them cool colours. Artists pick warm colours to make a picture feel cosy or sunny. Cool colours can make it feel calm or icy instead.
