Evolution is the slow way living things change over many, many generations. Babies are never exactly like their parents, and the small differences that help an animal survive get passed on more often. Over a very long time, those tiny changes can add up until a whole new kind of animal appears.

Scientists have found that birds are the living descendants of small, feathered dinosaurs. Over millions of years some of those dinosaurs grew lighter bones, longer feathers and wings, and slowly became the birds we see today. So the sparrow at your window is a tiny, modern dinosaur.

A kind of animal goes extinct when the very last of its kind dies and none are left anywhere. It can happen when their home changes too fast, their food runs out, or a new danger appears and they cannot adapt in time. Extinction has always been part of nature, but people can speed it up or help slow it down.

In nature, animals with helpful traits, like sharper eyes or better camouflage, tend to live longer and have more babies. Those babies often inherit the same helpful traits, so over time the whole group becomes better suited to its home. Scientists call this natural selection, and it is the engine that drives evolution.
