Modern farms often stretch across huge fields, and farmers use machines like tractors and harvesters to plant and gather crops far faster than anyone could by hand. Scientists have also bred plants over many years to grow bigger, resist disease better, and produce more food from the same patch of land. Even with all that help, farming still depends heavily on good soil, enough rain or irrigation, and a fair bit of luck with the weather each season.

Crop rotation means planting a different kind of crop in the same field each year or season instead of growing the same one over and over. Different plants take different nutrients from the soil, and some, like beans, actually put helpful nutrients back in, so rotating crops keeps the soil healthier for longer. Rotating crops also helps confuse pests and diseases that specialise in attacking just one kind of plant, since their favourite food is not there the following year.

Farms that raise animals for milk and eggs focus on keeping cows, goats or chickens healthy and well fed, since a happy, healthy animal naturally produces more. Cows need to be milked on a regular schedule, usually twice a day, while chickens need clean nests and enough daylight to keep laying eggs steadily. Farmers also have to keep barns clean, provide fresh water, and watch for illness, since caring for the animals well is what keeps the whole farm running.

Every plant needs water to grow, but some crops, like rice or almonds, need far more than others because of how their roots, leaves or growing season work. Rice is often grown in flooded fields on purpose, since standing water helps the young plants and also drowns out weeds that would otherwise compete with them. Farmers in dry regions sometimes have to bring in water from rivers or wells through irrigation, since rainfall alone would not be enough to grow certain thirsty crops.
