Weather computer models divide the atmosphere into a huge three-dimensional grid of invisible boxes, then use the physical laws of how air, heat, and moisture behave to calculate what should happen inside each box moment by moment, based on the current conditions reported from thousands of real measuring stations. Because the atmosphere is so complex, meteorologists run several different models, sometimes dozens, with slightly different starting assumptions, then compare the results to see how much the different predictions agree with each other.
