How do computer models actually predict the weather?

Weather computer models divide the atmosphere into a huge three-dimensional grid of invisible boxes, then use the physical laws of how air, heat, and moisture behave to calculate what should happen inside each box moment by moment, based on the current conditions reported from thousands of real measuring stations. Because the atmosphere is so complex, meteorologists run several different models, sometimes dozens, with slightly different starting assumptions, then compare the results to see how much the different predictions agree with each other. When multiple models strongly agree on an outcome, meteorologists trust the forecast much more than when the models disagree and produce very different possible futures.

Why is weather so hard to predict very far ahead of time?

The atmosphere is what scientists call a chaotic system, meaning even a tiny, nearly unmeasurable difference in starting conditions can snowball into a completely different outcome just a week or two later, an idea sometimes nicknamed the butterfly effect. Because weather stations can only measure conditions at certain points, never absolutely everywhere at once, every forecast starts with some unavoidable uncertainty, and that uncertainty grows larger and larger the further into the future a model tries to predict. This is exactly why forecasts for tomorrow are usually quite reliable, forecasts for next week are more of an educated guess, and forecasts for next month are barely more than a general climate pattern.

What tools do meteorologists actually rely on most?

Meteorologists combine many different tools to build a full picture of the atmosphere, weather balloons that carry instruments miles up into the sky, ground stations that measure temperature, wind, and pressure constantly, radar that tracks precipitation, and satellites that watch from space. No single tool tells the whole story on its own, weather balloons give a detailed vertical slice of the atmosphere at one moment, while satellites give broad coverage but less fine detail, so meteorologists layer all these different views together. Even with all this modern technology, meteorologists still rely on their own experience and judgment to interpret what the data is really showing, since raw numbers alone do not always tell the full story.

How has weather forecasting actually improved over time?

A century ago, weather forecasting relied almost entirely on scattered ground observations and human experience reading the sky, with forecasts rarely reliable more than a day ahead, but the arrival of radar, satellites, and powerful computers has completely transformed what is possible. Today's five-day forecasts are now roughly as accurate as one-day forecasts were several decades ago, an enormous leap in reliability driven by better data, faster computers, and improved scientific understanding of the atmosphere. Forecasting continues to improve steadily, but scientists expect there will always be some natural limit to how far ahead specific weather can ever be predicted, no matter how advanced the technology becomes.
