What are the different layers of the atmosphere?

Earth's atmosphere is organized into several distinct layers stacked on top of each other, starting with the troposphere near the ground, where nearly all weather happens, then the stratosphere above it, which holds the ozone layer that blocks harmful sunlight, and several thinner layers stretching even further up. Each layer behaves differently, temperature actually rises and falls in a strange pattern as you climb through them, instead of just getting steadily colder the whole way up. Airplanes usually cruise near the top of the troposphere or the bottom of the stratosphere, since the air there is calmer and easier to fly through than the turbulent weather layer below.

Why is the sky red at sunset?

At sunset, sunlight has to travel through much more of the atmosphere sideways to reach your eyes than it does at midday, and that longer path scatters away almost all the blue light before it ever gets to you, leaving mostly orange and red light behind. Dust, smoke, or extra moisture in the air can scatter even more of the remaining light, which is exactly why sunsets after a dry, dusty day or near wildfire smoke often look especially vivid red. The same scattering effect happens at sunrise, but sunsets often look more dramatic because the air usually holds more dust and particles by the end of the day.

What actually causes air pressure systems, like highs and lows?

A high-pressure system forms where air sinks and spreads out near the ground, usually bringing clear, calm weather, while a low-pressure system forms where air rises and cools, often creating clouds and rain as that rising air condenses. These systems are not fixed in place, they constantly drift across the map, pushed along by high-altitude winds, which is exactly why weather maps show pressure systems moving from day to day. Where a high-pressure and low-pressure system meet, called a front, is usually where the most dramatic weather changes happen, since very different air masses are colliding.

How do weather satellites actually help with forecasting?

Weather satellites orbit far above Earth, constantly photographing clouds, storms, and temperature patterns across huge areas that ground-based instruments could never cover on their own. Some satellites stay locked in place above one spot on Earth, watching the same region continuously, while others circle the whole planet repeatedly, building up a complete picture layer by layer. Satellite images let meteorologists track a storm's exact size, shape, and movement in real time, which is a huge part of why modern forecasts, especially for hurricanes, are far more accurate than they were decades ago.
