🔬 New dinosaur science

What can scientists learn from inside a fossil? Simple, true new dinosaur science facts for young children, each with a fun fact, a tiny activity and a question to talk about together.

Tap a question to reveal the answer, share the fun fact, try the tiny activity, then talk about it together.

What can scientists learn from inside a fossil? Revealexpand_more

Modern scanning machines let scientists peek inside a fossil without breaking it open. By making detailed pictures of the inside of a skull, they can study the shape of a dinosaur's brain and its senses. Cutting thin slices of bone under a microscope even reveals growth rings, showing how fast the animal grew.

🌟
Talk about itWhat would you most want to discover hidden inside a fossil?
Did you know?Scanning dinosaur skulls has shown that some had a very good sense of smell.
🎲
Try itShine a torch through your hand and see the shadow of your bones. Scanners see inside fossils in a far clearer way.

How do we know how fast a dinosaur could move? Revealexpand_more

Scientists work out dinosaur speeds without ever seeing one move. They measure fossil footprints, because the gap between steps hints at how fast the animal was going. They also use the size and shape of the legs, plus computer models, to estimate whether a dinosaur sprinted, jogged or merely plodded.

🌟
Talk about itWhich dinosaur would you guess was the fastest of all?
Did you know?Trackways of footprints can even show a dinosaur speeding up or turning to one side.
🎲
Try itTake normal steps, then running steps, and look at the gaps. Bigger gaps mean faster, just as with dinosaur tracks.

Could we ever bring dinosaurs back? Revealexpand_more

Bringing dinosaurs back like in the movies is not possible, at least not for real dinosaurs. To copy an animal you need its DNA, but DNA slowly falls apart and none can survive the tens of millions of years since dinosaurs died. Scientists study their fossils and their living bird relatives instead.

🌟
Talk about itWould you want dinosaurs to be brought back if it were possible? Why or why not?
Did you know? The oldest DNA scientists have ever read is far younger than the age of the dinosaurs.
🎲
Try itLeave a written message in the sun and rain for a while and watch it fade. Very old DNA fades away in a similar way.
🤖Still curious? Why does DNA not last for millions of years?arrow_forward

Are new dinosaurs still being discovered? Revealexpand_more

Yes, and more often than ever before. Fossil hunters around the world find new kinds of dinosaurs almost every week, often on average close to one a week. Each new discovery adds another piece to the picture, and there are surely many more still buried, waiting to be found.

🌟
Talk about itIf you discovered a dinosaur, what would you name it?
Did you know?Whole new dinosaur species are named more than fifty times in a single year.
🎲
Try itInvent your own new dinosaur, give it a name, and describe one special feature. New species really are named all the time.
🤖Still curious?How do scientists decide a fossil is a brand-new species?arrow_forward
