A job is simply work someone does to earn money, which might be temporary or only loosely connected to their other work experience, like a summer job at a shop. A career usually means a longer path built from related jobs in the same field, where someone gains more skill, responsibility, and often higher pay as the years go by. Many people change careers entirely at some point in their lives, which is more common today than it used to be, since skills learned in one field can often transfer into a completely different one.

Wages are shaped by supply and demand, meaning jobs that need rare, hard-to-learn skills, or that not many people want to do, often pay more, since employers have to offer more money to attract someone qualified. Jobs that carry serious risk, require years of expensive training, or are considered especially important to society can also pay more, though this is not always applied fairly or consistently. Wages also change depending on where you live and how much a local economy is willing or able to pay, which is why the exact same job can pay very differently in different cities or countries.

An entrepreneur is someone who starts and runs their own business, often turning an idea they believe in into a real product or service that other people will pay for. Starting a business is risky, since a new idea might fail to attract customers, and entrepreneurs often have to work extremely hard, especially in the early years, before knowing if their business will succeed. Successful entrepreneurs usually learn from early mistakes quickly, adjusting their idea based on what customers actually want rather than sticking rigidly to their very first plan.

Governments collect taxes from people's earnings and from things people buy, then use that shared pool of money to pay for public services that benefit everyone, including firefighters, teachers, and road workers. Because these jobs are paid for by taxes rather than by individual customers, people can call a firefighter in an emergency or send a child to a public school without paying directly at that exact moment. Deciding exactly how much tax money goes toward which public service is one of the biggest, most debated decisions any government makes each year.
