What are my bones made of?

Your bones are hard and strong on the outside, but they are alive and growing just like the rest of you. Inside many of them is a soft, spongy centre called marrow, which is a busy little factory that makes new blood for your body.

🌟
Talk about itWhich bones in your body do you think are the biggest and the smallest?
⭐
Did you know? You were born with around three hundred bones, but some join together as you grow, so grown-ups have about two hundred and six.
🎲
Try itFeel the hard bone along your shin or your elbow, then feel a soft part like your earlobe. One protects, the other bends.

How do my muscles move me?

Muscles are soft bundles that are joined to your bones, and they move you by squeezing shorter and then relaxing again. They usually work in pairs, so one muscle pulls your arm up while its partner gets ready to pull it back down.

🌟
Talk about itWhich activity do you think uses the most muscles in your whole body?
⭐
Did you know? You use around a dozen muscles just to make one small smile.
🎲
Try itBend your arm and feel the muscle on top bunch up and get hard, then straighten it and feel it go soft again.

How can I bend my arms and legs?

The places where two bones meet are called joints, and they work like tiny hinges that let you bend and twist. Smooth, slippery padding and a bit of stretchy rope called ligaments hold the bones together and help them glide without scraping.

🌟
Talk about itWhich joint in your body can move in the most directions?
⭐
Did you know?Your fingers have no muscles of their own, so the muscles that wiggle them are actually up in your palm and forearm.
🎲
Try itPoint to the joints in one finger and count how many places it can bend. Now try your elbow and your knee.

Why do I get a bruise?

When you bump into something hard, tiny blood tubes just under your skin can break and leak a little blood inside. That trapped blood shows through as a bruise, and its colour slowly changes from red to purple to yellow as your body cleans it up and heals.

🌟
Talk about itWhy do you think a bruise feels sore even though the skin is not cut?
⭐
Did you know?A bruise changes colour like a tiny sunset on your skin while it is healing.
🎲
Try itIf you have a bruise, check it once a day and watch how its colour shifts as the days go by.
