Why do boats float?

A boat's wide, hollow shape pushes water out of the way as it sits on top. That water pushes back up hard enough to hold the boat up. This is why even heavy boats made of steel can float, a big, hollow shape works better than a solid one. If a boat fills up with too much water, or carries too much weight, the water can no longer push back hard enough, and that is when it starts to sink.

How do sailboats move without an engine?

A sailboat has a big sail that catches moving air. When the wind pushes against the sail, that push moves the whole boat forward through the water. What is a submarine and how does it dive underwater?

A submarine is a special ship built to travel both on the surface of the water and deep underneath it, using large tanks inside its hull that can be filled with water or air. To dive, the submarine lets water flood into these tanks, making it heavier so it sinks below the surface, and to rise back up, it pushes that water back out using compressed air, making it lighter again. Submarines are built with extremely strong, thick walls, since the water pressure deep underwater pushes in on the hull far harder than the air pressure we feel every day.

Why don't giant ships sink under all that weight?

A giant ship's hull is shaped like an enormous hollow bowl, with most of its space filled with air rather than heavy material, which lets it displace a massive amount of water compared to its actual weight. Even though the metal itself is heavy, the huge volume of air trapped inside the hull's shape means the whole ship, air included, weighs less than the water it pushes aside.
